GRUPO DE EXPERIMENTACIÓN SONORA DEL ICAIC (1969 -1976)

One of my favourite groups of all time, really if their was a movie made about me - the majority of their tracks will be on the soundtrack. Grupo de expermentacion sonora del icaic - formed in 1969 - was a collection of talented Cuban artists brought together by Alfredo Guevara who at the time was president of the Cuban Institute of cinematographic Art and Industry. The groups sound was as diverse as their numbers - no coherent procession, some tracks sound like your listening to a Cuban elder reciting an ancient ditty, to , someone sitting in a smokey jazz bar thumping on the piano keys. Their sound doesn't "evolve" from album to album but rather from track to track on each individual album - I guess to show each of the members individual prowess in different genres of music - leaving nothing uncovered.

The group released 5 albums before they disbanded in 1976, the best one but not by far is 3 (see image above) released in 1975. Again the music arrangement is beautiful and the vocals on some of the tracks are some of the best you will ever hear, and again like albums pre and post you can't nail it to a specific genre - Folk, psyche, jazz, blues -  but why would you want to - the bands complexity and musical range is what makes their music extra special and unique.
