HERMANN SZOBEL - SZOBEL- ARISTA 1976

Hermann Szobel is one of those artists whose genius you know, is masking an underlying madness. The guy was a musical prodigy the fact that he created this masterpiece - his first and only album - at the age of just 18 show that the mans talent was immense -(i'm not talking Lily Allen "talent" I'm talking 6 year old Chinese boy playing Bach with his eyes closed talent).

It's a jazz fusion record that will also appeal to prog rock fans but has it's roots in classical music.

Szobel features on the keys (look out for the solos) and his musical composition and arrangements are mind blowing- the constant change of pace on some of the tracks leave you guessing as to where he's going to next - its organised - beautiful sounding - chaos.

Szobel recorded this album and has never been heard of since - apparently he was locked up in a mental institution, shortly after - they must have heard the album.

Totally underated and slept on - you have to get a hard copy of this album, its too important.

Because this is too good not to share we have recorded all five tracks of the album for our podcast and for you all to download and listen -

The madness begins.

There must be somebody SOMEWHERE who can help locate him.
I don't want to believe he is locked up.
There are rumours he is painting now?
    Or was in 2005??

I spent time with him in the spring of 76, taking photographs in Manhattan... atop the WTC!!!... at Cafe Reggio... in the subway...in his "office" - a public phonebooth... in Central Park and at Washington Square Park.

And in his loft, shirtless at the piano of course... He was AMAZING.

We went all over... and I did an interview and a story for a German magazine (BUNTE ILLUSTRIERTE).

He was talking about doing a solo LP next, maybe with synthesizer.
Sadly his brilliantly mad first LP was the only one he ever recorded - as far as we know.

I also shot him performing at the Village Gate in June '76. There he wore a blue jumpsuit. And a woollen scarf loosely wrapped around his right wrist.

As I am now working on a photo book about "My Seventies", I have been trying to locate Szobel - so far unsuccessfully.

    I...

I didn't realize my missive was limited, so here's the rest of my posting:

I have a 1970 photo of his parents, which he gave me, but it doesn't have their first names and I don't know if they are still around, but am going to follow that lead too.

That's how I landed on this page, BTW,
    googling "Szobel Wien"...

    Let's try to find him.

    Please help
