SWEET SMOKE - JUST A POKE (1970) EMI engineered by CONRAD (KONNY) PLANCK

For some strange reason I thought I had about 3 copies of this record and was going to give it out one of them in our first competition - Unfortunately I don't so something else will have to do.

Anyway while we're at it here's a little a bit about a band which some have hailed as one of the pioneers of fusion and had something of a cult following during the 60's and 70's and maybe in the 80's. Sweet Smoke were an American progressive jazz group. The Brooklynites moved over to Germany in the 60's and formed a commune of  about 15 - 20 people who apparently always came on stage when the five piece band played live. Shortly after their arrival in Germany they recorded their debut album Just a Poke which featured just two tracks both a mammoth 16 minutes or so long. - Baby Night being the stand out (Hear it below).

RANDOM SELECTION recorded by DOBIE (June 09)

Dobie is one of those old school legends  that has been collecting records from time immemorial - so when he says he has mix of random bits - do expect random bits.

There are no rules to this mix and there is no theme - the only thing all these tunes have in common is that they are all killah.

Enjoy

HENSLEY'S ELECTRIC JAZZ BAND & SYNTHETIC SYMPHONETTE - THE MASTERS OF DECEIT (1969 VANGUARD)

Another progressive rock gem, that was actually passed down to me. The band was a short lived progressive rock / jazz outfit led by keyboardist Tom Hensley - who will later fetaure with some of most recognised musicians in the 70's - and whose sounds were in tune with the scene with added humour. Reminiscent of Hatfield and the North and Nucleus.

Another one that's too good not to share.

 - Enjoy this gem

ANDY WESTBURY (FUNKI JUNKI) - ELDICA VINYL MIX FOR NUTS - RECORDED JULY 09

Another one especially for Nuts To Soup, this time by collector extraordinaire and the proprietor of one of the last few record stores standing in London - Andy Westbury.

Andy runs Eldica Vinyl in the middle of Dalston and within the past couple of years has become one of my favourite spots.

Check out the store - he'll take care of you, just don't speak bad of James Brown. www.eldica.co.uk

Bangin I'm sure you'd agree, There's another one just round the corner.

DEUCES MIXTAPE: RECORDED BY  HYPE WILLIAMS/HOUNDS OF HATE

(Top Photo: Hype Williams / Bottom Photo: Hounds of Hate)

This mix was put together through the combined effort of two of the original and freshest sounds in London if not the UK today - Hype Williams (Rawls Grabfelder/Karen) and Hounds of Hate. Both bands worked together in producing each of the others tracks during the conception stage of this project, which inevitably led to this 20 minute wonder.

At the risk of putting these groups into a sound bracket, I think the best description would possibly be lo fi/boogie/psychedelia reminiscent of the 80's devil funk band Wicked Witch - they may disagree.

This sold out on it's original format and demand is still high, so it is a real privilege to be able to get this out there to all NTS readers.

MY KIND OF WOMAN (RE - EDIT) courtesy of STEVIE J

A few months back I did a review on this record (see past review) and remember saying I was going to post up an edit of it as soon as i got it done. Well here it is only thing is i did'nt do this edit - I tried and tried and tried again, but eventually came to the conclusion that i was useless at this, it just didn't sound right.

The other evening Funkineven came by and we discussed the record and its potential - he said he would do the edit, I had it with me within 30 minutes of him getting his hands on the track.

THE GROUPIES - ALAN LORBER (1969) - EARTH RECORDS

You know when you go into a pub or bar , and theres that one guy sitting on his own - drunk - who can't help but come up to you and delight you with his pearls of wisdom - well on one of those occassions last year I got into conversation with a guy who claimed to have been a roadie to some bands in the 60's and 70's and was still doing the same job now, he told about his experiences back in his hey days and how much things have changed since then - Technology, fashion, quality of music and groupies.

Being someone who has NO experience with groupies, I was automatically interested in how groupies had changed from 40 or so years ago- and he's response to me was "they were an organised liberated front back in those days, groupies these days are very disorgansed and lack strategy" - interesting theory was my immediate thought.

Many moons later I  picked up a copy of The Groupies record above - thinking it was a band called the groupies - Upon receiving the record I realised it was actually a documentary with a few actual groupies from the 60's - immediately i was interested in their commentary their views etc - and then the rambling drunks words all seemed to ring true - he actually knew what he was on about.

GRUPO DE EXPERIMENTACIÓN SONORA DEL ICAIC

GRUPO DE EXPERIMENTACIÓN SONORA DEL ICAIC (1969 -1976)

One of my favourite groups of all time, really if their was a movie made about me - the majority of their tracks will be on the soundtrack. Grupo de expermentacion sonora del icaic - formed in 1969 - was a collection of talented Cuban artists brought together by Alfredo Guevara who at the time was president of the Cuban Institute of cinematographic Art and Industry. The groups sound was as diverse as their numbers - no coherent procession, some tracks sound like your listening to a Cuban elder reciting an ancient ditty, to , someone sitting in a smokey jazz bar thumping on the piano keys. Their sound doesn't "evolve" from album to album but rather from track to track on each individual album - I guess to show each of the members individual prowess in different genres of music - leaving nothing uncovered.

The group released 5 albums before they disbanded in 1976, the best one but not by far is 3 (see image above) released in 1975. Again the music arrangement is beautiful and the vocals on some of the tracks are some of the best you will ever hear, and again like albums pre and post you can't nail it to a specific genre - Folk, psyche, jazz, blues -  but why would you want to - the bands complexity and musical range is what makes their music extra special and unique.
